Let’s start this one off by explaining what personal brands are.
A personal brand is similar to a company brand but is to do with yourself and is about YOUR opinions and thoughts, not the company you work for. It is also a great way to promote other businesses or interests that wouldn’t traditionally fit within the companies and is becoming an increasingly popular way to promote yourself as an entrepreneur - like Gary Vaynerchuk.
So there are 3 key points to building a personal brand:
This could be a selection of things from creating content for your blog, Instagram and Facebook posts and YouTube videos.
With this, the more you post and the more you get involved in the community, the better your brand is going to be.
As part of your content production you need to think about getting involved with the community. This will help build your name and authority up as well as getting people to see your content. So get involved in Facebook and LinkedIn groups, answer questions on social media and talk to people on Instagram. Just get involved!
This takes some time to build and can be quite tricky. It’s all about getting people to understand that you know what you are talking about and can help them with their problems and objectives.
Getting involved in the community as mentioned above helps build this as it starts to position yourself as a leading authority in your particular area. So the social proof are comments and recommendations that people give you because they believe you are the best at what you do.
One way to boost your authority is to write on high-authority platforms such as Forbes or Buzzfeed for example.
These are the people you keep around you, whether on or offline.
How this works is by seeing the people who are liking and commenting on your posts on a regular basis, they can help you seem more reputable. If you have Bill Gates or someone of great renown commenting on your posts, people will really react and read these, because he is a trusted source of information.
So by building out a network of people who are trusted in their areas and getting them to engage with your posts, it starts to build your personal authority in your chosen area.
Another reason to build a great network is because of the potential reach you can tap into. If you have people who are liking, commenting and sharing your posts, they then start to reach that persons network. So the more people who you can get to share content, the larger the reach and potential for the ‘right’ person to see it.
